A groundbreaking film for young women about recognising early signs of abusive relationships, with resource notes on how to use the film in a variety of settings.
Love Control is an innovative short film that increases young women’s awareness of the early warning signs of abusive and controlling relationships.
Relationship violence is the greatest cause of preventable death, disability and illness in Victorian women between 15 and 44 years of age with young women entering into relationships for the first time being particularly vulnerable. Young women can often think that their relationship is okay just because their boyfriend is not hitting them, and can ignore controlling behaviour that is often a sign of worse to come.
Love Control is taken directly from young women’s experiences of abusive relationships, which shows how violence can get quickly out of hand.
The production of Love Control was made possible with funding from the Victorian Women’s Trust.
In October 2010 resource notes were created to accompany Love Control.
How do I get a copy of Love Control?
We only have limited DVD copies of Love Control, but would encourage people to watch it on the WHIN website or on You Tube .

The resource notes look at;
how to use the DVD in a variety of settings (such as in individual support, schools, community groups, mixed gender groups and staff capacity building);
how to respond to questions created by the DVD;
how to use the DVD tool to its maximum prevention potential; and
enhancing accessibility to prevention messages through using the plain English version of the notes.
These varied settings reflect the many sites within which young women are learning and interacting. It also highlights the many opportunities for preventative work available.
Violence prevention is an active, collective and developmental process. The goals of the DVD are to honour women’s voices, to create a safe debate, and to develop young people’s critical thinking by informing them, seeding ideas and creating a secure emotional space with them. The Resource Notes aim to support these goals by being developmental and centred on learning sites and processes.
